What is Quarter Midget Racing?
Quarter Midget Racing is a family oriented sport that involves racing in specially prepared cars. The cars, rules and safety procedures are designed specifically for kids. They race on oval tracks approximately 1/20 of a mile. Children and young teens from 5 to 16 years of age can race.
Safety features include full roll cages, 5-point seat harnesses, full face helmets, and fire retardant driver's gear. This sport has fewer injuries than little-league football.
The Quarter Midget sanctioning bodies are constantly reviewing and evaluating safety rules to ensure that quarter midget racing remains a safe and competitive sport. The racing environment is about children and family. Not only do kids learn valuable skills and sportsmanship, but they also make new friends.
Mom and Dad will make new friends too. This sport is probably the ‘best kept secret’ you'll ever enjoy!
What is a Quarter Midget Racecar?
A Quarter Midget car is a scaled-down version of an actual midget racer, approximately 1/4 scale. The cars are built around a tubular frame and are suspended on all four corners with springs and shocks. The bodies are either fiberglass or aluminum, usually painted to the drivers preference.
Surrounding the driver is a complete chrome-moly roll cage and nerf bars. The engines are single cylinder and are manufactured by Honda, Continental, Briggs & Stratton, and Deco. In the engines' stock configuration they produce between 2.5 & 4 horsepower.
Modifications in the upper classes allow these engines to reach several times the stock horse power. These air-cooled, 4-stroke engines are reliable and can produce as much as 10,000 rpm's in their more highly modified forms.
The speed of a Quarter Midget depends on the class, the engine size, and the track being raced at. Quarter Midgets are raced at both dirt and asphalt tracks that are specially designed for Quarter Midget Racing. As young drivers mature and their skill set grows more advanced, you will be rewarded by getting to watch your kid transformed into a fast race car driver.
A fast race car will complete a full lap in about 7 seconds, reaching approximately 30 mph in the straights.
Many recognized names have come from Quarter Midget Racing - notable NASCAR drivers like Jeff Gordon, Bobby Labonte, Jason Leffler, Mark Martin, and many more.
Also many great sprint car drivers have come up through Quarter Midgets such as Billy Boat, Nick Fass, Garrett Hansen, and many many more. This is a great way to get your kid started in a racing career.
